Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Rome on Tuesday night as part of the final leg of his five-nation foreign tour. During his visit, PM Modi met Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for a special dinner meeting that quickly gained attention across social media and international media platforms. After dinner, the two leaders toured the historic Colosseum together in the same car, where several photographs captured their friendly interaction and warm chemistry. The images, set against the backdrop of one of Italy’s most iconic landmarks, sparked widespread discussion online, with many users calling it a symbol of “strong diplomatic friendship” and a “power selfie” moment. Sharing details of the meeting on social media, PM Modi said he was pleased to meet Prime Minister Meloni after arriving in Rome. He added that both leaders exchanged views on several important topics and would continue discussions on strengthening India-Italy relations during formal talks scheduled later in the day. Meloni also welcomed Modi warmly through a social media post, calling him “my friend” and expressing happiness over his visit to Italy. One of the key issues discussed during the meeting was the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), a major connectivity and trade initiative linking India, the Middle East, and Europe. Both countries stressed the importance of speeding up progress on the ambitious project, which is expected to improve trade routes and economic cooperation between participating nations. PM Modi’s visit also aims to deepen bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, advanced technology, and global strategic partnerships. India and Italy are also reviewing their Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029 to expand long-term cooperation. Upon his arrival in Rome, PM Modi was welcomed at the airport by Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani. During the visit, Modi is also expected to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella and visit the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), highlighting India’s commitment to global food security and multilateral cooperation. Trade relations between India and Italy have grown steadily in recent years. Italy is currently India’s fourth-largest trading partner in the European Union, with bilateral trade projected to reach $16.77 billion in 2025. Both countries have now set a target of increasing trade to 20 billion euros by 2029, reflecting their growing economic partnership.
