The political equations in the Rajya Sabha are set to witness a slight shift as elections for 26 seats across 12 states will be held on June 18. The Election Commission announced the schedule on Friday, triggering fresh discussions over the possible gains and losses for both the ruling NDA and the Congress-led opposition alliance.
These biennial elections are taking place due to the retirement of several prominent leaders, including former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, and Union Ministers Ravneet Singh and George Kurian.
According to the Election Commission, nominations for the Rajya Sabha polls can be filed until June 8, while voting and counting will take place on June 18. At present, out of the 26 seats going to polls, the NDA holds 18 seats, Congress has four, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has one, and the YSR Congress Party controls three seats.
The elections will be conducted in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram. Karnataka is expected to emerge as the biggest advantage for the Congress, where the party is likely to secure three seats. Additionally, Congress is projected to gain one seat each in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, strengthening its overall tally in the Upper House.
The Congress-led opposition alliance is also expected to benefit in Jharkhand, where two seats are likely to go to the JMM-Congress alliance. Although the seats may formally belong to JMM candidates, politically they are expected to strengthen the opposition bloc at the national level.
On the other hand, the NDA is projected to lose one seat overall in this election cycle. While the numbers may not dramatically alter the balance of power in the Rajya Sabha, the results are expected to provide a morale boost to the opposition camp ahead of upcoming political battles. The June 18 elections will therefore be closely watched as another indicator of changing political dynamics across the country.
